Team Umizoomi

As some of you know, I've been working on Team Umizoomi for a few years and now that a fair amount of episodes have aired, I wanted to put together an Umizoomi reel showing off some of my favorite personal animations. I think it was especially important to put this together because when a episode airs, in any given scene there could be as many as 4 different flash animator's files + the after effect animator's puppeting, combined. In other words, pointing out what was done only by myself, can be difficult.

Yet another project I've worked on over at Hornet and directed by Guilherme Marcondes. This was created around September of last year and was my very first project over at Hornet. For some reason, I've only discovered it's existence online today so it's a been awhile since I've seen it and it feels fresh to my eyes.

Happy Belated New Year!
I promise to post more this year than I have in 2010.

Dust out some of the cow webs, get rid some of the dead links and presto! With the submission of this post, I fulfill my promise and have officially beaten my dismal post record for 2010.

Now I know this is a bit of a cheat as this video I'm posting below was completed in Nov/2010 and my Facebook friends have already seen it but for those of you who check my blog from time to time (thanks) looking for an update, forgive me, but the drawings will come soon :)

Dale's been doing a great job of motivating me. I hate to give him so much credit cuz he's such a jerk otherwise, but if you ever find yourself in a drawing rut, dale's the man. I'd like to also point out that for me, the month of Sept was by far the most productive month since the start of the blog. Exactly double from 2nd highest (14 posts). Go me! Go me! High fives all around. Here's hoping that my future months are just as productive. Thanks to you folks who come back and continue to throw up your comments. It helps and definitely keeps me going :)

Ugh, so while I was dotting my "i"s and crossing my "t"s I was rereading some of the design limitations of the t-shirt contest when I came across this little nugget of info...

Needless to say, that knocks me out of the competition. Dunno how I missed that clause (doh). Ironiclly, hours ago, I did a rough redesign of the shirt with 5 colors and a bunch of other improvements which would have worked and I preferred more over this one (Thanks for the advice Max) but with the deadline looming and my eyes feeling particularly heavy I thought better to just go with what I had... FAIL! Hehe oh well. I'll be ready for the next contest and when I get around to the redesign, I'll be sure to share it here.

I did this bit about a year ago as a test to see if I could teach myself After Effect's 3D settings and 3D camera. I quickly built a scene in photoshop then got inspired to add some flash animations to it. Setting up took alot longer than the actual animation.

Its been a very busy 2 months.

Coming home after a full day of work with the occational lost weeknight and weekend, can unmotivate you from drawing/animating. So your basically left with whatever projects your currently working on, to show off... except there are confidentiality agreements you also have to abide by. Boo!

So, I'll start out this post by showing off what I can "show off".

Last year, about this time, I was approached by Jason Pattan to do some animation for his (and his brother's) short film. I wanted to hold off showing off my contribution, until his film was finished and being entered in film festivals. The time has come...

Ok, now on to more recent work. In Feb, I was working on the pilot "Chicky Poo and Fluff, Barnyard Detectives". The style if very sweet and colorful. It was done mostly in After Effects (puppeted animation) with some tradtional plug in animation throw in, for a look that I can desrcibe as "cutesy plush animated storybook toys". We managed to also put together an interstitial for it, so please keep an eye out for it on Nick Jr. I'll be sure to add a link to it whenever Nickelodeon decides to promote it

And last (but certainly not least) my most recent gig at Transistor Studios. We did some promotional ads for ESPN's ISU World Figure Skating Championships 2007 in anime style. Now, I'm not much of a manga artist but I feel that we all did a great job, and I'm pretty excitied to see these air. I can't show any of that work yet either, but I can provide airdates:

We had to create a model sheet and make the story work with our new creations. Its pretty funny to see how popular Luchadores have become since then. Well as some of you folks already know, I recently left Little Einsteins. A new opportunity knocked and couldn't pass up. In all the holiday chaos, I never got around to sending out a proper email thanking the good folks over at Curious for their time. It was a very good learning experience for me and I got to make alot of new friends, though it took me awhile to open up (sorry, I'm a shy guy).

I'm not much for making speeches so instead I made this lil' tribute. Leo was one of my favorite kids to animate and during season 2, I was able to flex my animation muscle abit more (especially my last cycle). I had this idea floating in my head since season 1 and I finally found a nice chunk of time to get it done. I'm pretty happy with it, and I don't have any current plans to clean it up (took about 8 hours to animate Leo). Hope you folks enjoy it!

"Superfriends" are folks that I know alittle more personaly and have worked with (I even call some... "friends", but never to their faces). "Other Superheros" are links that will lead you to other MEGA talented folks. Some I've met during my days at SVA, at comic conventions or via email, others I've stumbled upon surfing the web or word of mouth. These are links that I visit quite often.

I'm back! Ok not too happy about leaving the sun but I'm still pretty happy with my break. Florida is awesome, would love to live there one day animating from the beach... ahh a man can dream. Here's the only sketch I did while I was down there.

Hello Folks.

Sorry for the long break. Freelance + New Job + Playing an MMO = very little time.
Ok that last part of the equation is my fault. I've been drawing, I just needed to get my scanner up and running again and now that I have...

This 1st drawing I did after watching Silent Hill the 2nd time. Man I really love the effects. These guys really stuck to the orignal's blueprint. Would I recommend the movie? Only if you've played the game. The name of this guy is Pyramid Head. I did it w/o reference so its off.

The 2nd drawing is of the new alliance race in world of warcraft, the Draenei. I'm looking forward to making one of those.

Unused Bugs Concepts

While I'd like to show some of the stuff I've done on the pilot, I don't think I can legally (or ethically), at least not yet. Instead I have some concepts for some bugs (extra characters, not the stars).

I tried to match the aesthetic of the show in some, and with some others I went abstract, just to give more options. Ultimately none of these were used, but considering how great they turned out, I'm okay with that.

With my girlfriend's birthday looming I got the idea of searching the web for a Snoopy t-shirt. With zero luck on findng the perfect shirt, I stumbled upon a website that makes custom shirts. At $20 bucks a pop, I figured its time to get creative and design something a little more personal.

Enter... Da Fidz tm (yeah, I trademarked that).

I won't get into the name, except to say it's a bird lover's thing. What I will say is that it took a ton of sketches to match each bird's personality:
